May Collaboration: Olive n’ Suede
We’ve been looking forward to sharing our May collaboration with you all! This month we’re collaborating with Taylor Toms, owner of Olive n’ Suede. We first met Taylor when she moved to Santa Barbara from Colorado. Her pure heart and natural spirit are one of a kind! Her spirit can be felt through her company and the beautiful creations that she shares with others through Olive n’ Suede. Originally from Colorado, Taylor has established new roots in Oceanside, California. Her work reflects her Colorado roots and the spirit of seaside living. We are very happy to be able to support and collaborate with Taylor in the pursuit of her passion. Conscious consumerism is high on our priority list- It’s important for us to know the soul that created each piece that we purchase. Know that when buying a piece from Olive n’ Suede that you’re supporting a beautiful woman with a heart of gold. It’s all about women supporting women, we are proud to partner with companies like Olive n’ Suede!
First, tell us a little bit about yourself and your company.
My names Taylor Toms and I’m the owner, designer and maker of Olive n’ Suede. I have been working with leather for 3 years or so and am currently creating out of my boyfriend and I’s little studio in Oceanside. The process of making each piece is my favorite part when it comes to creating bags. Most days the challenge is space. The sewing machine is in the kitchen, the work bench is the coffee table and the hand stamping station is a slab of tile on the bed. We like to call it the “artist studio” and I’m lucky he doesn’t mind.
What inspired you to start your company?
I discovered my passion for creating when I was in search of a unique leather bag myself. I couldn’t seem to find exactly what I wanted so I bought a leather hide, began cutting and ultimately constructed a bag. Soon my mom and sister wanted one and then family and friends- Olive n’ Suede has been growing ever since. Coming from Colorado to Southern California, my designs have been inspired by the desert and ocean. I continue to create with the idea of aging materials, earthy tones and handmade details.
What are the 3 ideas that you aim to promote through your company?
I would say the love for handmade craft, being able to have the leather bag for many years, and the importance of creative detail.
We acknowledge that community is a huge inspiration for artistic expression- Do you have any goals in mind for future collaborations?
I’d love to find someone that works with different materials like weaving with natural grasses or palms and collaborate on a line of bags and accessories. My friend Jenna Bee makes amazing bags and we made a few together which was so much fun. I’d love to do that again too!
